As someone from Bangkok, when a former colleague whom I have known for more than 20 years came to visit, I wanted to take her somewhere beyond the city’s usual tourist attractions — somewhere she could experience a more local side of Bangkok.

We ended up spending part of the day at Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market, on the Thonburi side of Bangkok.

Floating markets have long been associated with Thailand, particularly the famous Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi. But travelling there takes more time, and today it attracts large numbers of tourists. Other well-known choices such as Amphawa and Don Wai also require travelling farther outside central Bangkok.

Khlong Lat Mayom offers a different experience. It is still within Bangkok, making it relatively easy to visit for a morning or half-day trip.

More Local Market Than Floating Market

Despite its name, Khlong Lat Mayom is not the kind of floating market where dozens of boats fill the canal.

Most of the market is actually on land, spreading along the canal and surrounding area. What I enjoy is seeing the many local merchants selling Thai food, desserts, vegetables, fruit and fresh produce, including items brought in from local gardens.

It feels more like a large weekend community market built around the canal than a floating market created mainly for visitors.

Food is naturally one of the main attractions. There are plenty of cooked dishes, snacks and traditional Thai desserts to try, while fresh produce and plants add to the local-market atmosphere.

From my experience, prices also felt quite reasonable, especially compared with markets that cater more heavily to tourists.

Taking a Boat Through Bangkok’s Smaller Canals

Another experience worth adding is the boat ride.

From the market, small boats take visitors along the surrounding waterways, passing through narrow canals behind the main roads and residential areas.

Don’t expect endless plantations or untouched countryside. Bangkok has grown considerably around this area, and the scenery is a mixture of homes, small gardens, patches of greenery and neighbourhood life.

But that is also what makes the ride interesting.

For visitors who spend most of their time travelling along Bangkok’s busy roads, the boat ride offers a glimpse of another layer of the city — the network of smaller canals and communities that still exists behind the streets.

A Different Side of Bangkok

For me, taking my former colleague to Khlong Lat Mayom was less about showing her a famous attraction and more about sharing an everyday Bangkok experience.

You can walk through the market, try different Thai foods, buy something directly from local vendors and then take a boat through the nearby canals. It doesn’t require travelling far outside Bangkok or setting aside an entire day.

Khlong Lat Mayom may not give you the classic image of hundreds of boats that many travellers associate with Thailand’s floating markets. Instead, it offers something simpler: a busy local weekend market, a canal, plenty of food and a chance to see another side of Bangkok.

Sometimes, that is exactly the kind of experience I want my visiting friends to discover.

Planning Your Visit

Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market is located in Taling Chan, Bangkok, on the Thonburi side of the city. The market operates mainly on weekends and public holidays. Opening times, boat services and transportation arrangements can change, so I recommend checking the latest information before visiting.

I would allow a few hours to explore the market without rushing, especially if you want to eat and take a boat ride.
