Explore Yangon, Myanmar

Yangon, previously known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). The city boasts a mix of British colonial architecture, modern high-rises, and gilded Buddhist pagodas, including the popular Shwedagon Paya, a massive, shimmering pagoda complex that draws thousands of pilgrims annually. Other notable religious sites include the Botataung and Sule pagodas, both housing Buddhist relics. Myanmar has become more tourist-friendly since opening up to visitors in 2012, with democratic elections in 2015 further boosting business and travel.

Trip Highlights
Major highlights in Yangon include Shwedagon Pagoda, Sule Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple (Reclining Buddha), Botataung Pagoda (home to Bo Bo Gyi, the popular spirit guarding the pagoda), Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda, Swe Taw Myat Pagoda, Kandawgyi Park, and Bogyoke Aung San Market.

I’ve visited Yangon multiple times, and during each trip, I would pay a visit to Shwedagon Pagoda twice a day: once in the early morning to avoid the hot sun, and later before sunset to enjoy the glittering golden pagoda. There are two ways to reach the pagoda: using the elevator (south) or taking the escalator (west) in barefoot like the locals. Remember to take off your shoes and socks when visiting temples in Myanmar. Other popular temples within the city include Botataung Pagoda and Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple.

Many new international hotels have sprung up across the city in recent years, with my favorite being Chatrium Hotel, a well-known chain from Thailand. Ask for the wing facing Shwedagon Pagoda to enjoy a magnificent view at night.
